One of the more enigmatic bands of the classic 4AD era, Swallow was formed by Louise Trehy and Mike Mason. They started writing songs together, drawing inspiration from a healthy mix of sources: CAN, noise, post-punk, and American forces of nature like Captain Beefheart and Butthole Surfers.
The debut album Blow would be released in July of 1992. That album was revisited - new mixes and overdubs, dissonant and ambient versions of tracks. Released as Blowback in the autumn of 1992 as a limited (quickly fell out of print) CDEP.
1995 would see The Chemical Brothers sampling the Blow tracks ‘Peekaboo’ and ‘Follow Me Down’ on ‘One Too Many Mornings’, taken off their massively successful debut LP Exit Planet Dust. This brought new ears and royalties, both happily welcomed. For the next 30 years, Swallow would enjoy a cult following among only the most dedicated shoegaze fans and 4AD obsessives.
At long last, Swallow’s 4AD recordings will be paid their due via a new double-LP+ 12” package entitled Blown, out 5 June. Comprising both Blow and Blowback, the previously unreleased title track ‘Blow’, and a vocal version of ‘Lovesleep’. A cornerstone dream pop classic obscured by the mists of time and memory, until now.
